Tom Pigott, our tour guide from Enchanted Tours, told the story of the Irish Potato famine and migration at the cemetary and sang a “immigration song” of a brother who had been left in Ireland and his sadness at losing his 2 brothers. The 1840 famine still touches people deeply as the saddest time in Irish history and tears are shed when the stories of their ancestors are told.
Our first stop on Saturday, 6/18 was the Skibberen Heritage Museum, where we learned about the Irish Potato famine and mass migration outside of Ireland. We then visited the cemetary and saw the mass graves where over 8,000 were buried.
When we arrived in Skibberen, the rain had stopped. An Irish wedding was in full swing at our hotel, and we enjoyed a great Irish meal and traditional music by a local singer. Our Irish guide, Tom and driver Paddy, have lived close to this area of Ireland their entire lives so have local connections and an indepth knowledge of the history and customs. Their sense of humor is priceless - as they say - all Irish lie so if they don’t know something, they’ll make it up!
